History
The origins of Montignano Castle date back to 962 when Otto I of Saxony was crowned Emperor of Germany and King of Italy by Pope John XII in Milan and immediately sought to create a group of feudal lords loyal to him in central-southern Italy. Count Arnolfo, a courtier and relative of the emperor, was granted a part of Umbria and the county which also included Montignano.
In the early 1500s, the Atti family expanded their possessions to the borders of Montignano, which had been owned until the 15th century by the Matalucci family. In the first half of the 18th century, the Spanish, imperial, and French armies that descended into Italy due to the succession wars disrupted the tranquility of Montignano. In the 18th century, the Matalucci family renovated the Castle, turning it into a manor house, with an elegant loggia, a private chapel, and a garden.
The Matalucci family died out in the male line, and in 1775, Lavinia, daughter of Giacinto Matalucci, married Count Francesco Francisci of Todi. After about four centuries, the Francisci family sold Montignano Castle to Angelo and Vincenzo Tacchi, merchants from Foligno, who held Montignano for 20 years and showed no interest in the property.
The Alcini family of Massa purchased the castle in 1908 along with the estate, including the grain mill.
Enrico Alcini, who died in 1940, one of the most prominent figures in the family, was Mayor of Massa Martana and is remembered for numerous initiatives aimed at improving the Municipality.
In 2000, Engineer Giuseppe Alcini, the last descendant of the family, decided to convert the Castle from a residence to a luxury venue for destination weddings and exclusive events. In April 2009, after nearly 5 years of renovation work, Giuseppe finally opened the Montignano Castle to the public.

Amazing wedding venue!
We recently had our 2 day wedding event at Castello Di Montignano in September 2023 and we loved every minute of it!
After reading great reviews we were confident we had chosen the right venue for us but it really did exceed all our expectations.[…]
